Keynote Speaker

From college dropout, to plumber, to trainer, to speaker and coach, Keith Mercurio has encountered a series of extraordinary failures and some humble successes. But it’s that perfectly flawed journey that he used to connect with the room in Myrtle Beach. Contractors left with actionable items to take back and put into practice to reframe how they approach their businesses. Click the video at left for a clip from Keith’s keynote address on April 24.

SC Economic Update + Forecast

In an informative session, Joey Von Nessen, Ph.D., Research Economist at University of South Carolina, detailed how the state’s economy has experienced a strong rebound throughout Summer and Fall 2020, with most major sectors approaching pre-recession employment levels. The Leisure and Hospitality industry is the major exception. Residential housing demands are likely to remain strong, though growth may subside when consumer spending shifts back to pre-pandemic norms.

Financial Statements + Profitability Equations

Ruth King is known by contractors as “The Profitability Master.” She spoke with SCALT Convention attendees about using financial statements to support business operations decisions. Her message that if you look at financial statements and use her profitability equations, you can can learn if your decisions are helping or hurting your bottom line. Play the video at left for an excerpt on choosing how to serve–or not serve–your customers profitably.

Legislative Update

SCALT Lobbyist Ben Homeyer recapped the recent work your Legislative Committee has supported, including Business License Tax Reform, the COVID Liability Shield Law, Minority and Small Business COVID Relief programs and workforce development apprenticeship grants (see Apprenticeship Carolina article below). Homeyer also summarized forthcoming legislative issues the association is watching, including more relief grants. SCALT will keep you informed of legislative activities through this e-newsletter and special action alerts as needed.
